Formats
Hockey formats you can run
Ice and field hockey use the same entry list, so a club can run a midwinter cup and a summer league from one registry.
Pool play → playoffs
Round-robin groups first, then the top teams advance into a seeded knockout bracket.
Best for: Weekend tournaments with several rinks or pitches.
Single elimination
Straight knockout draw for 4–64 teams, with an optional third-place game.
Best for: One-day cups and short brackets.
Double elimination
Winners and losers brackets with a grand final and reset, for 4, 8, 16 or 32-team fields.
Best for: Events where one loss should not end the weekend.
Round robin
Every team plays every other team, with configurable points and tiebreakers.
Best for: Small divisions and festival days.
Swiss system
Fixed rounds with strength-based pairing and Buchholz / Sonneborn-Berger tiebreakers.
Best for: Large junior fields that need a fair ranking without a knockout.
League season
Home-and-away fixtures with a table, configurable points and seeded playoffs.
Best for: Club leagues running through a season.
Workflow
From the first period to the final whistle in three steps
The draw, the ice or pitch schedule and the scores stay in sync, so you are not rebuilding the bracket after every game.
- 1
Create the event
Pick hockey, set the dates, venue and rinks or pitches, then open online registration or import a team list by CSV/Excel.
- 2
Build the divisions
Add senior, junior or club divisions, choose a format, set the points target and seed the draw.
- 3
Run the day
Check teams in with a QR code, publish the venue schedule, enter each result, and let brackets and tables update live.
Rules
Hockey rules and scoring in Brakto
Brakto records results and manages the draw; periods, penalties and the game sheet stay with your officials.
Periods and power plays decide the game
Ice hockey is played in three periods and field hockey in four quarters, with power plays and penalty minutes. Brakto does not track periods, penalties or shots — your officials keep the game sheet.
One result per match
Each match is a race to the points target you set per division, with an optional required winning margin. Enter the agreed result and the winner advances.
Level results in league fixtures
Decide before the season how a level fixture is settled — overtime, a shootout or shared points — and record the outcome you want the table to use.
Double elimination field sizes
Double elimination is supported for 4, 8, 16 and 32-team fields; other sizes are rejected with a clear message.
Squads, eligibility and byes
Set squad size and age or grade limits per division, seed the draw, and place byes where the field does not fill the bracket.

Hockey questions, answered
- What hockey formats can I run?
- Brakto supports pool play into playoffs, single elimination, double elimination, round robin, Swiss and league seasons. Formats are chosen per division, so age groups can use different structures.
- Does Brakto track periods or penalties?
- No. Brakto records the final result of each game rather than periods, penalties or shots on goal. Your officials keep the game sheet, and the organizer enters the score against the points target for the division.
- Can I use it for both ice and field hockey?
- Yes. Brakto works with any hockey code: set the venue names to rinks or pitches, the match length to suit the code, and use one division per age group or grade.
- How much does it cost to run a hockey event?
- Free covers up to 8 players offline (CSV/manual import). Online registration costs a one-time $25 setup, and each player pays a flat $2 service fee added to their entry fee — the organizer keeps 100% of every entry fee. Club is $999/yr (or $99/mo) for unlimited events, with no per-player service fee. Standard payment processing fees apply when players pay you online.
- Do teams see their schedule and results?
- Yes. Teams can follow their fixtures, venue and next match on their phone, and scores entered during play update brackets and standings live.
- Can I import entries and check teams in?
- Yes. Import teams by CSV/Excel when entries were collected offline, then use QR check-in at the venue. Printable PDF brackets are free for up to 64 teams.
